Alan Shearer claims Liverpool are out of the Premier League title picture and, unless things improve, they "won't win anything" following a steep decline from the opening weeks of the season.

The Reds had been relentless to start the year, winning five on the bounce to establish a lead at the top, but since losing to Crystal Palace in late September they've been on a downward spiral. Arne Slot has now seen his side lose seven of their last ten in all competitions.

That includes five of their last six in the league, which has seen them fall away. Now leaders Arsenal hold a seven point lead over Liverpool with Manchester City also ahead of them.

Pep Guardiola's side outclassed them on Sunday, winning 3-0 at the Etihad with the Reds offering little in response. It was a cruel reality check and Shearer believes they could easily end the season trophyless.

He told Betfair: "If Liverpool continue to play like they did against Manchester City, then they won't win anything. They'll get dumped out of whatever competitions they're in. They've got the FA Cup and the Champions League, but I do think the league's gone for them now they've lost five games.

"I don't see them being in a title race now. I think they would have to probably win every single game between now and the end of the season. I don't think that's possible. So, I think their title race is done. It's the Champions League or the FA Cup for Liverpool, but they won't be winning any of those unless they improve anyway."

Liverpool began the year as defending champions and off the back of a summer that saw them spend £400million - which included two deals that broke the British transfer record. However the team is not clocking with several of their big names not delivering.

In the lead up to the City clash Liverpool had beaten Aston Villa and then backed that up days later by downing Real Madrid in the Champions League. Shearer thought that may serve as the moment that reignited their faltering campaign.

However they were unable to build on that success with a number of their familiar flaws on show. "It was a bit of a surprise because I thought the Real Madrid game might have been a turning point for them," said Shearer.

"It might have been a sign for them to say, 'Let's go, let's do this, let's kick on for the rest of the season'. But it actually went back to what it was a couple of weeks earlier. They were really flat; they were really poor defensively."
