A Champions League star’s agent is “taking care” of business amid rumours of a move to the Premier League.
Dayot Upamecano has spoken out about his contract situation at Bayern Munich, assuring fans he will make the “right decision” as speculation grows over his next move.
The French defender’s current deal with Bayern expires at the end of the season, meaning he could walk away on a free transfer this summer.
Upamecano has been linked with Liverpool in recent months after the Reds failed to secure Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace during the summer transfer window. The England international had a medical on deadline day, but Palace blocked the move as they failed to find a replacement.
Guehi’s contract also expires at the end of the season, but Liverpool would likely only sign one of him or Upamecano.
Speaking to L’Equipe, the French international said: “My agent is taking care of it. We will make the right decision. I’m getting good advice. Right now, I’m focused on this season and my goals with the club and the national team.
“I don’t have the headspace for it.”
Reports have also linked the 26-year-old with Real Madrid, claiming the Spanish giants reached a verbal agreement to sign him shortly after Liverpool’s Champions League win over Madrid at Anfield last week.
It could spark a triple merry-go-round at the end of the season. Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konate had been tipped for a move to the Spanish giants, which would open the door for one of Upamecano or Guehi to join the Reds; whoever doesn’t move to Anfield could then plug the hole left by the other at their previous club.
Speaking about Guehi’s failed move to Anfield last summer, Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish said: “We felt we’d have a better season if we kept Marc. This is our first time in the Conference League - it’s a unique situation.
“If we were just fighting for mid-table, maybe we’d have taken the money.”
