Bill Belichick makes first comments about Giants job

University of North Carolina head coach Bill Belichick has been frequently mentioned as a potential candidate for the Giants’ head coaching job. On Tuesday, he shared his thoughts on the speculation.

After the Giants fired Brian Daboll on Monday and named Mike Kafka the interim head coach, Brian Murphy, a sports investigative reporter for Raleigh, North Carolina television station WRAL, spoke to Belichick about the job. Belichick sidestepped the talk about the Giants and said he was focused on North Carolina.

“I’ve been down this road before. I’m focused on Wake Forest. That’s it, and that’s my commitment to this team. And next week, it’ll be to our next opponent, and so forth. I’m here to do the best I can for this team.”

Belichick’s assertion that he wants to remain at North Carolina falls in line with what he had to say during a news conference on Oct. 13, reiterating his desire to remain at the school after reports came out that he was seeking to be bought out of his contract and leave.

“Some of the reports about me looking for a buyout and trying to leave here and all that is categorically false,” Belichick said. “There’s zero truth to any of that. I’m glad I’m here. We’re working towards our goals and the process.”

Belichick was with the Giants from 1979 to 1990, starting as a defensive assistant before working his way up to defensive coordinator. With Bill Parcells as the Giants head coach, the team won two Super Bowls.

Last December, Belichick agreed to coach North Carolina in December 2024 and has since compiled a 4-5 record. The Tar Heels are two games away from bowl eligibility with three games remaining in the regular season. If Belichick were to leave North Carolina, his buyout would only be $1 million.
