Ally McCoist says Ivan Toney would help Everton do 'the hardest thing in football' if he joined

Everton have been linked with a move for Ivan Toney in recent days after the striker’s excellence continued abroad in Saudi Arabia – and that has led Ally McCoist to list Everton as a side who would be in the queue for him due to their inability to score.

Everton have had a good start to life in the Premier League, racking up 15 points from 11 Premier League games under David Moyes to take them to within three points of European qualification.

There have been some poor results along the way, but a sturdy defence has seen them through games and an increased midfield force has seen them improve across the board.

But the striker position remains one of the big question marks over Moyes’ side – and that has led Ivan Toney to be linked with a move to the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Ally McCoist says Everton would surely be ‘in the queue’ to sign Ivan Toney

Speaking on talkSPORT’s live coverage of ‘Ask Ally’ on Tuesday morning, McCoist was asked by co-host Alan Brazil whether Everton would be queueing up for a move for Ivan Toney.

And the Rangers legend said that there was no doubt the Toffees would be interested in a move for his services, after reports earlier in the week suggested Everton were in the market for Toney. He said: “Oh, you better believe it. It’s the hardest thing to do, put the ball in the back of the net.

“I think it will be a problem coming back; the tax implications, the money, not knowing all the details, that you have to stay out of the country.

“He’d have to weigh up that situation. These guys are on fortunes. He probably wouldn’t come back in that period.

“If and when the time is right, there will be plenty of clubs. Everton would come into the equation, Tottenham with [Dominic] Solanke struggling to keep fit.

“There would be no shortage of offers.”

Whether the Toffees can get a deal over the line is another question. But having revived the careers of English players Jack Grealish and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall in recent months, Toney could fall under the same category.

Ivan Toney would be an exceptional signing for Everton

There is no doubting that Ivan Toney would likely be Everton’s best striker signing in recent years, and likely since Romelu Lukaku joined from Chelsea in the summer of 2014.

Beto and Thierno Barry have largely failed to deliver, with Barry yet to score in the Premier League and Beto notching just 12 goals in 71 top-flight outings since his move in the summer of 2023.

Since then, Oumar Niasse, Moise Kean, Salomon Rondon, Armando Broja, Cenk Tosun, Enner Valencia and Neal Maupay among others have all joined with little influence.

Richarlison was a natural winger who was forced up front and played his part, whilst Dominic Calvert-Lewin was incredible in the Carlo Ancelotti days, but he didn’t live up to expectation in recent years.

Toney would bring both Premier League experience, having scored 36 goals in just 83 top-flight games for Brentford, as well as international outings for England.

At just 29 years of age, he has years left in the tank and a move back from Saudi Arabia could prove to be the perfect match for the Northampton-born star.
