Barcelona defender with contract expiring in 2026 opens up on future – ‘I don’t have a plan B’

Andreas Christensen is staring at an uncertain future at FC Barcelona, given that his current contract with the club expires at the end of the season.

Indeed, the Dane, who has once again struggled with fitness issues, will be a free agent in the summer of 2026, with there being no contract renewal offer from the Catalans yet.

Everything so far suggests that Barça might be looking to part ways with the 29-year-old centre-half, given the concerns surrounding his fitness.

Christensen discusses future

Now, speaking to Tipsbladet (h/t Mundo Deportivo), Christensen opened up on his future at Barcelona even as he prepares for Denmark’s World Cup qualifiers against Scotland and Belarus.

“The situation doesn’t create uncertainty for me. I think we’re in a good position and there’s nothing that can change my day-to-day life,” admitted Christensen.

Continuing, the Danish defender added: “Of course, you want to have everything under control and know what’s going on, but it’s not something that affects us during the day, nor something we talk about.

“We have desires, we all do, but it’s not something I think about daily. I try to do what I can on the pitch and I hope that’s enough to keep me there.”

When asked about a possible contract renewal, Christensen was open but cautious, saying:

“I hope everything ends up like this. I don’t have a plan B, but I have no idea yet. I prefer to concentrate on being part of the team and playing as much as I can. Now I have to see what happens.”

Leaving the matter to his agents, the ex-Chelsea ace added: “If there’s something to be done, of course it will be done. Of course, I’d like to know what’s going on, but I prefer to focus on what I can do.”

On possible Brondby return, love for Chelsea

Christensen also spoke about the possibility of one day returning to Brondby, the club where he began his career, saying:

“In an ideal world, I would like to finish my career at Brondby, but it also depends on the stage of life I’m at. It also depends on what my family is doing. I feel I still have a lot to offer; I’m 29 years old, I can still compete.

“When you’re that age… it depends a lot on the situation, so it’s difficult to say. I repeat, in an ideal world, I would like it to happen. But if it doesn’t, I won’t be angry or sad. It depends a lot on my family’s situation and my performance as a player.”

Christensen also addressed a photo that circulated online showing him watching a Chelsea match on his phone, by saying:

“I think it was captured incredibly well! We always sit on the bus, especially if it’s a bit far from the hotel, and watch the matches, if there’s a good one on.

“Some people watch them on iPads, others on phones. I forgot to flip to the page on my phone. It’s usually just to pass the time, and when you get to the stadium, you focus completely.”

However, the Dane did admit that Chelsea holds a special place for him, as he said:

“Chelsea meant so much to me, and the club is also one of the main reasons why I’m now at Barcelona. I won titles with them, I won the biggest trophy of all, the

Champions League, and I’m incredibly happy with my time there.

“Now I not only watch their Champions League matches, but also their Premier League games, and you learn a lot of things when you’re no longer there. Even so, I’m happy with my time there and I still have some friends.”
