The New York Giants are turning to veteran quarterback Jameis Winston for Sunday’s game against the Green Bay Packers.
With rookie QB Jaxson Dart in concussion protocol and Russell Wilson struggling in his opportunities this year, Winston is expected to start this weekend against the Packers, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Jameis Winston has yet to appear in a game this season but he has played in 105 games over the course of his NFL career.
The former Florida State star won the Heisman Trophy and a national championship while leading the Seminoles, before being drafted with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
In addition to the Bucs, Winston has also played for the Saints, Browns and now Giants.
Last season in Cleveland, he appeared in 12 games, completing 61.1 percent of his passes and throwing for 2,121 yards with 13 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.
Winston made the Pro Bowl as a rookie in 2015 and also led the NFL in passing in 2019, throwing for 5,109 yards and 33 touchdowns. However, he also threw 30 interceptions that year. He is known as a gunslinger who has a strong arm and can make all the throws but who also turns the ball over too often.
The decision to start Winston was made by Giants interim head coach Mike Kafka, who has taken over for the fired Mike Daboll.
Rookie Jaxson Dart has played well for the Giants this season, throwing for 1,417 yards and 10 touchdowns, with 3 interceptions. He’s also rushed for 317 yards and 7 touchdowns. However, he suffered a concussion this past weekend against the Bears.
As for Russell Wilson, he’s thrown for 831 yards with 3 touchdown and 3 interceptions in limited playing time this year. The veteran is also completing a career low 58 percent of his passes.
