In the summer transfer window, Sunderland made an effort to sign Bologna’s Jhon Lucumi.
The defender’s agent made it clear that the player was seeking an exit. Even though the Black Cats made an offer, a transfer didn’t go through as the Italian side stood firm after the release clause date was missed.
Lucumi has now become an important part of Bologna again, even scoring in a victory over champions Napoli on Sunday.
The Colombian’s agent Simone Rondanini has now spoken to Tuttomercatoweb about his client’s future and current situation.
He made it clear that Lucumi is currently enjoying himself at Bologna.
“The coach has never done without him, and Jhon has maintained a level of professionalism that sets him apart. There have been difficult situations, and he’s always wanted to defend the club’s colours.
“It’s right that [Vincenzo] Italiano has taken this attitude into consideration, in my opinion.”
Lucumi’s current deal at Bologna runs until 2027. His agent was also asked about the possibility of a renewal.
“Right now, we want to focus on the pitch, both at Bologna and with the national team. Doing well is crucial for his future. He and his family are happy in Bologna, and we’ll make every decision calmly.”
The Black Cats can take some hope from what the agent has to say. That is because Bologna are said to have offered Lucumi a new contract. But so far, no progress has been made on that front.
Lucumi is now back in form too, having started the season slowly.
If Sunderland do come forward for him in January, they would land a player who is playing at a high level once again.
