Mads Hermansen’s £15m switch to West Ham has failed to pay off with the Denmark manager admitting he’s worried about his goalkeeper’s status.

The former Leicester City number one had a very difficult start with the Hammers, conceding 11 goals in his first four appearances.

He was then dropped from the starting line-up and has not been able to regain his place under new manager Nuno Espirito Santo, with Alphonse Areola preferred between the sticks.

Speculation is now emerging that the Hammers will cut their losses on Hermansen and try to sell the 25-year-old in January.

Certainly, there is already concern about his lack of minutes. His national team manager Brian Riemer the situation is “not good” and that while he’s selected Hermansen for this month’s international fixtures, it would become a “challenge” to do so in future if he’s not playing.

“It does (worry me),” Riemer told Danish media. “Of course, when you are somewhere where you don't play at all, it's not good. I don't think I need to stand here and say that it is, because that's logic.

“But Mads is a fantastically-talented goalkeeper, and what reassures me is that I'm sure he will find himself at West Ham and solve the situation that has arisen now.

“I know how skilled he is, he shows it every time we are together. That is also one of the reasons why he has been selected again here now. I know how hard he trains at West Ham.

“But it is clear that in the long run – not only for Mads but for the squad in general – it is clear that if you are somewhere where you don't play any minutes, it will become a challenge at some point.”

While Hermansen has been a regular in the Denmark squad for a few years now, he’s still not made his debut, with former City captain Kasper Schmeichel still the number one.

Hermansen was City’s biggest sale of the summer, with a base fee of £15m and with add-ons potential taking the deal to £18m.
