The Nico Harrison era ended with a thud Tuesday after he was fired by the Dallas Mavericks. The general manager has been the face of controversy after the February trade of Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers.
Fans of the team, which currently sits at 3-8, second to last in the Western Conference, turned on Harrison, routinely chanting “Fire Nico” at Mavericks games.
“This decision reflects our continued commitment to building a championship-caliber organization, one that delivers for our players, our partners, and most importantly, our fans,” team governor Patrick Dumont said in a statement.
Mavericks assistant general managers Michael Finley and Matt Riccardi will take over basketball operations of the team in the interim.
Harrison has been general manager of the Dallas Mavericks for four years but became the focus of the fans’ anger after the Mavericks traded Doncic on Feb. 2 and received Anthony Davis, Max Christie, and a 2029 first-round pick.
The team has also suffered from injuries, with Davis only appearing in 14 regular season games for Dallas and star guard Kyrie Irving’s ACL injury, who has no clear return date.
In a letter to fans, Dumont addressed the franchise’s struggles directly. “No one associated with the Mavericks organization is happy with the start of what we all believed would be a promising season,” he said. “When the results don’t meet expectations, it’s my responsibility to act.”
The Mavericks will host Phoenix Tuesday night.
