Irish in the NFL: Three Alums Making History at the Next Level

Carolina Panthers Long Snapper J.J. Jansen

Only one former Fighting Irish player gets to be feature first each week, but J.J. Jansen earned this honor on Sunday.

By doing what, you might ask?

Well, just by playing in the Panthers' Week 10 game on Sunday, Jansen became one of 28 players in the history of the National Football League to play in 270 games, tying both Calais Campbell and Tony Gonzalez.

For reference, as of Nov. 11, 2025, the Panthers have played 493 games since 1995, meaning that Jansen has played in 54.8% of all games in the franchise's history.

Jansen, who is already the only Panthers player with more than 250 games played, trails only Marcedes Lewis for the most games played by an active player. Lewis has played in 287 games from 2006 to 2025.

With 7 games left in the Panthers' season, Jansen could reach the 277-game mark, which would be the 25th most by any individual player, and would put him just 23 games away from becoming one of 12 players to play in 300 NFL games.

If Jansen reaches the 277-game mark, he would be just 26 games (roughly a season and a half) away from holding the record for the most games played by an undrafted Notre Dame alum. That record is currently held by John Carney, who played in 302 games from 1988 to 2010.

The Panthers play the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday.
