Patrick Bamford's Sheff Utd talks post-Leeds come with a catch - Chris Wilder needs quick fix

Leeds United’s two-time promotion winner Patrick Bamford is in talks to join Sheffield United on a free transfer this week.

United had to make some brutal decisions during the summer window to rebuild for the Premier League. Included in that was casting Patrick Bamford out from the senior squad.

Later in the window, Bamford was then confirmed to have left the club with his contract severed early by mutual consent.

Patrick Bamford in talks with Sheffield United months on from Leeds United exit

Bamford hasn’t been short of interest since leaving Elland Road. He was in advanced talks for an intriguing move to La Liga with Getafe, only for that deal to fall through.

Since his release, Sheffield United have been on the periphery too. Now, the Telegraph’s Mike McGrath reports that they are back in the pursuit for Bamford.

Talks are claimed to be underway between the striker and Chris Wilder’s side, after Bamford helped United pip the Blades to automatic promotion last season.

Wilder was sacked and replaced by Ruben Selles, whose abysmal start to the campaign saw him sacked in September. He was replaced promptly by Wilder, who hasn’t yet overseen a real ‘bounce’ in results. The Blades still sit three points adrift in the bottom three. They’ve collected just two more points (10) than their stricken city rivals Wednesday (8, but deducted 12 for entering administration).

BBC reporter Andy Giddings has shed further light on the talks, revealing that Bamford’s move to Bramall Lane would be on a short-term deal until January:

In addition to @mcgrathmike reporting Sheffield United in talks to sign Patrick Bamford.

Understand those talks are for a short-term deal until Jan initially, which makes sense given the CW’s need for a ‘number 9’. #sufc | @footballheaven

Patrick Bamford could be set for Chris Wilder team-up after controversial Leeds United, Sheffield United past

Wilder’s historic comments on Leeds have sparked plenty of needle between the two Yorkshire clubs in the past. Bamford has been at the centre of it twice.

First, when Wilder’s Blades beat Leeds to promotion in 18/19, he took to their club site to react to the achievement with a dig for the Whites forward:

“We’ve had one defeat in 13 and I’ve got muppets from Leeds talking about the pressure being on us. Bamford and Forshaw and a couple of others saying ‘it’s over to you’ and this, that and the other.”

Then, as Leeds and Bamford got their own back in beating Sheffield United over the line under Daniel Farke, Bamford was caught stirring up jibes aimed at Wilder outside the East Stand.

“Du, du, du…” Bamford started, egging the Leeds fans to carry on the chant branding Wilder a certain expletive. That footage unsurprisingly went viral, but Bamford buried the hatchet during a 20-minute phone call with Wilder.

“I had a conversation with Pat yesterday and I’ve no issue at all with it. I’m not sure about the words from a fellow pro, but I appreciate and respected him giving me a call and we had 20 minutes,” Wilder said in response.
