The Pittsburgh Steelers waived former Cleveland Browns safety Juan Thornhill on Monday.
The move was the latest in a series of changes for the team’s secondary, which has struggled through the season.
Thornhill, 30, was signed as a free agent from the Cleveland Browns, where he played in 2023-2024. Many thought he would replace Minkah Fitzpatrick as the team’s free safety. But he was benched after a poor performance against Green Bay and has not played in the team’s last two games.
The team claimed defensive back Sebastian Castro off waivers from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to replace him.
“Juan Thornhill has struggled in recent years and never caught on in Cleveland, and his most notable moment was jogging on a play against the Saints last year for the Browns,” cleveland.com Cleveland Browns reporter Ashley Bastock said. “For the Steelers, Castro is also younger which I’m sure they took into consideration.”
In addition, the Steelers signed Asante Samuel Jr. on Nov. 12 as part of the team’s secondary overhaul.
