LAKE FOREST, Ill., — The Chicago Bears' secondary could use a boost as the final eight games of the regular season begin. With the secondary being banged up, they are missing key pieces like starters Jaylon Johnson and Kyler Gordon.
But on Wednesday, head coach Ben Johnson provided an update on both players and what the Bears are hopeful for.
"We should be able to get them back at some point at the end of the season here," Johnson said. "But kinda to-be-determined on when those clocks will start ticking here. I just saw Jaylon in the weight room. He's excited about where he is right now and he's hopeful he'll be able to be out on the practice field here in the near future."
Johnson has been on injured reserve since Week 3, following an injury he suffered in the Week 2 loss at Detroit which required surgery. It was the only game he's appeared in so far this season and he missed all of training camp and the preseason with a groin injury. Without their top corner, the Bears have had to rely on Tyrique Stevenson and Nahshon Wright as their top two corners. The addition of C.J. Gardner-Johnson has also helped give them a boost.
For Gordon he suffered groin and calf injuries during practice leading into the Week 8 game against the Baltimore Ravens. He missed the first four games of the season with a hamstring injury as well.
Johnson still believes the injury is on the short-term side for Gordon.
"We're still thinking that. Yeah, we're still thinking that," Johnson said. "I can't tell you exactly when but hopefully in the near future here.
Gordon is eligible to return from injured reserve ahead of Week 12. Once the Bears activate his window to return, he will have 21 days to be moved to the active roster.
