West Ham United Women return to action tonight as they host Southampton FC Women in the Subway Women’s League Cup.
The Group C fixture will be played at the Chigwell Construction Stadium in Dagenham, with kick-off scheduled for 7pm on Wednesday. West Ham currently sit top of the group after a strong start to their campaign, while Southampton are chasing a much-needed win to keep their progression hopes alive.
The Hammers go into the tie full of confidence following their recent league performances and cup form. Rehanne Skinner’s side have already picked up two wins in the group and will be aiming to make it three from three in front of their home supporters.
Southampton, meanwhile, find themselves in a must-win situation and will likely set up to frustrate West Ham while looking to hit on the counterattack. The match promises to be a competitive and entertaining encounter under the lights in Dagenham.
Tactically, the Hammers are expected to control possession against a side from the Championship. Their experienced midfield will look to find pockets of space and stretch Southampton’s back line. The Saints however, have shown resilience this season and are capable of soaking up pressure and striking quickly in transition.
West Ham will need to stay alert defensively to avoid being caught on the break, especially from set-pieces where Southampton have been dangerous.
Several players will be worth keeping an eye on. For West Ham, Viviane Asseyi remains a constant attacking threat and will look to continue her impressive form in front of goal. Shelina Zadorsky brings leadership to the defence, while Seraina Piubel adds energy and drive in midfield.
On the opposite side, Tara Bourne will play a vital role in keeping West Ham’s forwards at bay, and Chloe Peplow will be tasked with linking play through the middle. Former Hammer Emma Harries could also be one to watch, as she faces her old club for the first time since making the move to Southampton.
With home advantage and momentum on their side, West Ham enter as favourites. However, Southampton’s hunger for points and underdog status could make this an unpredictable contest.
If the Hammers can find their rhythm early and convert their chances, they’ll be well placed to strengthen their position at the top of Group C. But as cup competitions often show, surprises are never out of the question.
Starting XI: Walsh, Endo, Cemal, Nystrom, Hanshaw, Belloumou, Houssein, Csiki, Brassero, Ueki, Pavi
