Jameis Winston was Drew Brees' immediate successor as New Orleans Saints quarterback. So it's only fitting that as Brees returns to the broadcast booth, it'll be Winston on the field throwing passes.
Winston will officially make his first start of the season for the New York Giants on Sunday, the team confirmed Wednesday. He's forced into action — jumping fellow veteran Russell Wilson on the depth chart — after rookie QB Jaxson Dart suffered a concussion last week.
Looking down on him from the booth will be Brees, Super Bowl-winning Saints QB who retired in 2021. Winston was Brees' backup during the 2020 season and was eventually chosen to replace him the next year.
Brees has been hired on at Fox as a color commentator and will reportedly finish out the season in that role.
After retiring, Brees earned a gig with NBC as a color analyst for Notre Dame football games and an in-studio NFL analyst. He lasted one season there and drew some criticism for his commentary.
“I would love to broadcast NFL games at some point again,” Brees said last year when he was inducted into the Saints Hall of Fame. “I think I could be the best at it.”
Brees will also be a game analyst for Netflix's Christmas Day game coverage.
On Sunday, Brees will join FOX play-by-play commentator Adam Amin, whose partner was previously former quarterback Mark Sanchez.
Sanchez was arrested in Indianapolis last month on felony battery charges and is no longer with FOX.
Winston's time in New Orleans, despite flashes, was marred by injuries, and he was eventually replaced when the Saints traded for Derek Carr.
Winston has since played for the Cleveland Browns, starting seven games in 2024, and landed with New York this offseason.
Before joining the Saints, Winston was a one-time Pro Bowl QB for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers from 2015 to 2019.
