One of Europe's biggest clubs eyeing January transfer "attack" for "special" Liverpool ace

A key update has emerged regarding the future of Joe Gomez at Liverpool, with a move away in the January transfer window mooted.

Gomez is now the Reds’ longest-serving player, with the 28-year-old joining the club from Charlton Athletic back in the summer of 2015, making 248 appearances to date.

The centre-back is struggling for playing time for Liverpool, however, featuring for just 43 minutes in the Premier League this season, and he is out of contract at Anfield in 2027.

According to a fresh transfer report from Corriere dello Sport [via Sport Witness], an “attack is on the way” for Gomez from AC Milan in the January window.

The fact that Arne Slot hasn’t given him much playing time is seen as a boost for the Serie A giants, although there is nothing concrete about a potential offer from them.

Will this be Gomez’s last season at Liverpool?

Gomez will no doubt be tempted to enjoy a fresh challenge next summer, especially given his squad status at Liverpool, and the Reds may also be willing to cash in on him before losing him on a free transfer the following year.

That said, he appears to be a player that Slot still values as a strong squad option, with the Reds’ head coach hailing the “special” quality that exists in his game:

“He always makes sure he is ready whenever the club or his teammates need him, and that is special when it comes to his mentality because not many players can do this for so many years that he has done this. But last season he played many, many, many games – I think you could call him a starter that season – and in some other seasons maybe he was more of the second choice in every other position in the last line.”

Purely from a financial perspective, Liverpool should consider moving Gomez on at the end of this season, in terms of receiving a fee for him, but keeping him until his contract expires would also be no bad thing.

Much depends on whether Ibrahima Konate stays put, and the amount of centre-back depth that comes in next summer, but Slot and Richard Hughes, and the player himself, will have a big decision to make.
