Manchester United are clamping down on what staff share on social media. The Red Devils want behind-the-scenes activity to remain private and are set to crack down on 'self-promotional' material being posted.

United want to exert greater control on the content released from within the club amid concerns over material that has gone out without their approval. It is reported that staff will be provided with new guidelines outlining what club-related content is not appropriate to share on personal channels.

Senior club officials are said to believe that too much unsanctioned content is released into the public domain by staff with access to the first team. Telegraph Sport reports that United have no desire to be 'killjoys' but do not believe they are being unreasonable to have stricter rules over content from within the club.

It is noted that the club have never had any issue with staff sharing official content that they have contributed to. But the move is said to have enjoyed a mixed reception.

Some argue that highlighting pride in work at the club on social media was a positive action, and that the move to restrict it is an overstep. Others suggest that Sir Alex Ferguson ’s reign came with strict oversight over what was made public.

United's sporting director, Jason Wilcox, recently discussed the culture the club are striving for among all staff. “At the heart of it is our people, it’s really important,” Wilcox said.

“I have a saying: feel like a family, perform like a team, and if we can feel like a family and create this atmosphere where we are able to have honest conversations, we’re able to give feedback, we’re able to have new ideas, no one gets offended. This is the environment that we’re trying to create.”

Despite the clampdown on what escapes the club's inner facilities, Manchester United supporters are being offered the chance to tour the club's new Carrington training complex. It will become part of some Old Trafford stadium tours.

United fans will be provided with access to the dressing room, gym, recovery areas and press conference room, in addition to the players’ lounge. They will not be permitted to take photographs of United’s inner sanctum, however.

The £50million hub was opened in August and will see tours arrive at the end of the season. The June start will come as their players jet off for the World Cup. The club will charge £100 for adults, over 65s and under 16s, it is said.
