The end result of the play didn't work out in the New Orleans Saints favor, but Nathan Shepherd still earned NFC Special Teams Player of the Week for his blocked field goal against the Carolina Panthers in Week 10.
Shepherd, who also recorded a sack in the Saints' 17-7 win, burst through the gap between the long snapper and left guard to get his hands on Ryan Fitzgerald's 48-yard field goal attempt.
Shepherd's block momentarily preserved a 10-7 Saints lead in the second half, though New Orleans almost ruined its own opportunity when Cam Jordan tried and failed to recover the loose ball.
Because Jordan touched the ball on the Saints side of the line of scrimmage, it became a live ball when he did not gather control. Carolina took over with a first and 10, but fumbled the ball back to New Orleans shortly thereafter.
Shepherd is the second Saints player to receive a weekly honor from the NFL this season, joining defensive back Kool-Aid McKinstry, whose two interceptions against the Giants earned him NFC Defensive Player of the Week honors.
The last Saints player to win Special Teams Player of the Week honors was Bryan Bresee, also for a blocked field goal last season against the New York Giants.
