Manchester City's Stadium to host five matches during UEFA euro 2028

Manchester City and Manchester City Council are proud to share that our stadium will host five matches during UEFA EURO 2028, including England’s opening game of the tournament should they qualify directly.

The announcement comes as UEFA and UK & Ireland 2028 have today released key details about the competition which is less than 1,000 days away.

It has been confirmed that the Manchester City Stadium will host four Group Stage matches across four different groups, offering local and international fans the chance to see a range of teams in action. In addition, we will host a Round of 16 knockout match in Manchester.

The tournament will kick off at the National Stadium of Wales in Cardiff on Friday 9 June 2028, culminating in the Final at Wembley Stadium on Sunday 9 July 2028.

Commenting on the announcement, Danny Wilson, Managing Director of Manchester City Operations, said:

“Hosting five matches as part of UEFA EURO 2028, including England’s opening match should they qualify directly, will be a special moment for the Club, the city, and most importantly – its people.

“Manchester has a proud history of hosting some of the world’s best sporting and cultural events, including the Commonwealth Games in 2002 which kick-started the sports-led regeneration of this area of Manchester.

“Thanks to our work alongside Manchester City Council and the Club’s continued commitment to investing in world-class facilities, we are proud to continue bringing the best of the world to Manchester, and in turn, showcasing the best of Manchester to the world.”

Tonight, at precisely 20:28, all digital advertising screens in Manchester city centre and at the stadium were switched to display the UEFA EURO 2028 branding to celebrate the announcement and build excitement.

Across the UK and Ireland, nine stadiums will host matches during the tournament. Quarter-finals will take place at the Dublin Arena (Ireland), Hampden Park (Scotland), the National Stadium of Wales, and Wembley Stadium (England). The Semi-Finals and Final will then be held at Wembley Stadium.

In total, there will be more than 3 million tickets available for the competition, which will be sold by UEFA. More information on tickets will be issued in due course.

Following an independent assessment, UEFA EURO 2028 is expected to generate up to £3.6 billion in socio-economic benefits for the UK and Ireland between 2028 and 2031.

These benefits will include job creation, regional growth, and direct spending from international visitors, which will build on the Club and Council’s ongoing investment in East Manchester.

Commenting on the announcement, Leader of Manchester City Council, Councillor Bev Craig, said: “Manchester is known the world over as a great footballing city and we could not be more excited to be welcoming such a prestigious tournament, which is enjoyed by millions of fans around the world, to our city. We’re a city where football runs deep in our DNA and we’re counting down the days to UEFA Euro 2028.

“As well as our unrivalled love for football, the city brings together an exceptional network of partners who are working tirelessly to ensure a world-class experience for players, fans, and visitors alike.

“It’s important also to acknowledge the ongoing investment in facilities and development of the area around the stadium in East Manchester into a world-class sports and entertainment campus - which is what enabled us to put the strongest possible bid in to host the tournament, and ultimately led to us being chosen as one of the tournament’s host cities.

“As well as enjoying some fantastic football from world-class players at the top of their game right here on our doorstep, we’ll be going all out to maximise the benefits to Manchester of hosting the tournament, and with a projected economic boost to the local economy of over £200 million, it’s an absolute win-win for the city and for local residents.”
