Graeme Murty’s side went into the game looking to build on their opening 2-2 draw against Anderlecht and continue what has been an encouraging run of performances across league and cup competitions this season. The fixture also provided valuable minutes for several senior players as they looked to maintain sharpness ahead of a busy Premier League schedule.
Dan Neil, Dennis Cirkin and Luke O’Nien were all involved, with Murty opting for a blend of first-team experience and youthful energy from the club’s academy ranks. The combination made for an intriguing contest under the lights on Wearside, as Sunderland’s youngsters tested themselves once again against elite European opposition.
Here’s how James Copley rated each Sunderland U21s player on the night against Athletic Club at the Stadium of Light:
Blondy Nna Noukeu didn't have a great deal to do but did his job well with minimal fuss. Couldn't do anything for the visitors' goal. 7

Dennis Cirkin assisted Sunderland's opening goal with a really good run from full-back. Played a superb ball for the "pre-assist" into Jaydon Jones for Sunderland's third goal. Netted Sunderland's sixth with an excellent finish. Came off (planned) around 60-minute mark. Really strong display. 9

Luke O'Nien started at centre-back and didn't have much to do, but perhaps should have done better with Bilbao's goal in the first half. Steady display at the back. 7

Ben Kindon looked solid alongside Luke O'Nien at centre-back in the first half. Continued that form into the second half. Looked good today. 7
