Lions star pass rusher not concerned about injury forcing him to miss any time

ALLEN PARK -- Aidan Hutchinson missed the first practice for the Detroit Lions of the week due to an elbow injury.

But Hutchinson doesn’t sound concerned about the issue forcing him to miss any time. Hutchinson directed reporters to the official practice report for any clarity on the injury on Wednesday afternoon.

“Nothing to worry about. Just a little bump in the road, but we’re good,” Hutchinson said.

“Not at all (concerned about it keeping him out against the Philadelphia Eagles this weekend).”

Hutchinson played 50 snaps in the team’s 44-22 win over the Washington Commanders. He posted a season-low two pressures and received his lowest graded game of the season from the folks at Pro Football Focus.

It’s rare for Hutchinson to miss practice, so his status is worth tracking this week. Hutchinson leads the NFL with 57 total pressures, and has seven sacks, seven tackles for loss and four forced fumbles despite seeing constant double teams.

There were some other pieces of clarity to come out with Wednesday’s practice report.

In all, the Lions were without right tackle Penei Sewell (ankle), running back Sione Vaki (ankle), tight end Brock Wright (ankle), tight end Sam LaPorta (back), safety Kerby Joseph (knee) and cornerback Terrion Arnold (concussion protocol).

Sewell suffered an injury against the Commanders, too, but he returned to action after sitting out a couple of plays. After the game, Sewell said he was all good, and it was one of those things that calmed down as the game continued.

Vaki and Wright were spotted working with trainers to the side of the practice during the open window. Vaki has been hampered by groin and hamstring injuries since the Lions reported for training camp, so another new injury to manage isn’t great news. Detroit also added familiar face Anthony Firkser to its practice squad this week, to boost the depth at tight end, with LaPorta dealing with something, too.

Joseph still has not practiced while missing the team’s last three games. There has not been much of an update from the team regarding his timeline.

Left tackle Taylor Decker (shoulder), offensive lineman Miles Frazier (knee), center Graham Glasgow (back), defensive lineman Pat O’Connor (knee), edge defender Josh Paschal (back), running back Jacob Saylors (back), cornerback D.J. Reed (hamstring) and edge rusher Marcus Davenport (pectoral) were all limited.

Decker continues to manage his shoulder issue, so no surprise there. Frazier, Paschal, Davenport and Reed are all working inside of their 21-day window to return. Frazier and Paschal returned last week, while Davenport and Reed practiced for the first time on Wednesday.

“You know, they’re taking care of me, but, you know, it was good actually getting back out,” Davenport said in the locker room.

“To get back (has been the mindset), you know, watching everybody have fun, taking the losses hard and just missing it.”

In the good news department, linebacker Malcolm Rodriguez (knee) was listed as a full participant. Rodriguez has been back at practice for two weeks already, so expect to see him activated before the Lions play the Eagles this upcoming Sunday night.

The Lions added linebacker Ty Summers to their main roster last week, opting to give Rodriguez more time on his quest to return from an ACL injury.
