It happened again. Just as JJ McCarthy seemed to be gaining momentum as the Vikings’ starting quarterback, he has landed in the injury spotlight once more — this time slamming his throwing hand into a helmet during their Week 10 loss and now facing swelling, padding, and uncertainty heading into Week 11.

During the third quarter of Minnesota’s loss to the Baltimore Ravens, McCarthy’s right hand caught the helmet of a teammate while following through on a pass. He finished the game, but the damage quickly surfaced: swollen hand, protective bandage, and limited practice reps much earlier in the week.
Head coach Kevin O’Connell confirmed JJ McCarthy would wear the bandage and said the injury “isn’t expected to affect his week of preparation very much,” yet admitted the quarterback wasn’t 100 percent.
Why This Is More Than a Minor Bump
For McCarthy — who missed his entire rookie year after knee surgery and later suffered an ankle injury this season — this latest setback dredges up the big question: can he stay healthy long enough to develop? Heavy Sports+1
A quarterback’s right hand is critical. Even slight limitations can compromise grip, accuracy and timing.
The Vikings are in a pivotal spot (4‑5 as of this update). Relying on an injured quarterback at this juncture is a gamble.
Trust and momentum matter. Each injury erodes confidence — both in the QB and from the team around him.

The Bigger Picture
JJ McCarthy’s talent is undeniable — from his standout years at the University of Michigan to the first‑round draft pick status. But in the NFL, availability often trumps ability. This injury adds to a growing narrative of fragility around McCarthy’s early pro years. If the Vikings are to make a playoff push, they’ll need the big plays and a durable signal‑caller.
