Tottenham Hotspur have been looking to bring in a midfielder that can grind out in the second phase and then be a threat going ahead for some time now. This is where the North Londoners were aggressively eyeing Conor Gallagher when he was on the exodus list at Stamford Bridge. But the English international ended up going to Atletico Madrid instead.

While Gallagher is available in the market, his performances have dipped under Simeone. And this has got the Lilywhites being linked to the likes of Elliot Anderson. But given that the Nottingham Forest star will be available for a pricey fee, the North Londoners have to look elsewhere. And this is where Tottenham’s links with a move for Napoli midfielder Scott McTominay come back on the supporters’ lips.

The midfielder has been linked with a move away from Antonio Conte & Co. There have been reports suggesting that the likes of Manchester United, Barcelona and Newcastle United hold concrete interest in the 28-year-old alongside Tottenham.

And the case to bring in McTominay begins with his output. Since his move to Serie A, the Scotland international has netted 17 goals in 50 appearances. His performances have also earned him a Ballon d’Or nomination. For a midfield that has lacked a consistent scorer for some time now, Tottenham desperately needs someone like him who has that capacity to drive the team forward.

And purely on paper, bringing in a Man United academy graduate, given his goals and late runs from midfield, ends up addressing a clear need at N17.

What does Thomas Frank need in his second phase?

Thomas Frank will be desperate to add more amour into his midfield

The Dane head coach is desperately looking to add more goals from the middle of the park. He would have hoped that Xavi Simons would have done that job. But the Dutch international has been struggling to settle into the pace and power of the English top tier. This is where the need to bring in someone who can not only add the goals but also add that capacity to drive with the ball arises at Hotspur Way.

And this is where the links with a move for McTominay come into the picture.

It doesn’t directly indicate that Tottenham are getting someone in to take that starting spot from Simons. But instead more of someone who can support him as well.

Signing McTominay has a huge upside at N17

Tottenham want to bring back Scott McTominay to the Premier League

The North Londoners have been desperately looking for more depth and a new dimension from the midfield (as discussed above). And Scott McTominay is the perfect opportunity to bring exactly that.

He is a forward-thinking midfielder and has this knack for arriving late into the box. How many times have we seen him finishing chances and bringing creativity to the attack while he was still at United? Now he has taken that game to the next level with Napoli. And that is exactly what Tottenham needs.

At the moment we have seen quite some sequences from Tottenham which don’t really penetrate into goal-scoring opportunities, and that is exactly what McTominay brings.

He has this sense of unpredictability in the attack. And given how good he is at getting goal side, it will bring a threat to the opponents’ goals beyond just the front line. This should ideally create even more problems for opposing defenders.

McTominay also brings an element of reliability. Having someone in the middle of the park who can consistently chip in with goals will relieve a lot of the goalscoring burden from the front line, especially during tough stretches of games where breaking the deadlock can take time (like the last few games at Hotspur Way).

And this extra dimension gives Tottenham some tactical variability as well, given Frank can set up his side to take a shot from various spaces and zones (much like his Brentford team).

But will Napoli sell?

Even if Tottenham are pushing to buy him alongside other elite clubs, Napoli are clear in their stance to keep hold of the 28-year-old. They value McTominay quite highly and have no immediate reasons to sell him.

So Tottenham will have to pay up hefty fees to sign him if they are to pry him away from under the noses of Barcelona and Manchester United.
