What Danny Rohl has done at Rangers to spark Premiership form revival
The former Celtic, Aston Villa and Chelsea man believes his old rivals still have a chance at SPFL Premiership glory.
After their worst start to a season in 37 years, Rangers have already given themselves a mountain to climb in this season’s title race.
The Light Blues currently sit fourth place in the table, five points behind Celtic and 12 behind league leaders, Hearts. While they may have a game in hand on their Edinburgh rivals, the current form of Derek McInnes’ unbeaten men means it will be a monumental task for Danny Rohl to catch them.
Despite their shaky early league form, since Rohl’s appointment, Rangers are three for three in the Premiership, with their most recent victory coming against Dundee in a 3-0 demolition at Dens Park. As we approach the fixture-congested festive period, the 36-year old will be hoping to continue this winning run.
As the Govan side’s domestic form picks up, title race murmurs have resurfaced and with January just around the corner, all three of Rangers, Celtic and Hearts are set to have another busy transfer window. A former Hoops hero has said that if the Gers do January right, they’ve still got a chance.
Rangers can be league leaders if they win January ‘arms race’
Former Celtic striker, turned outspoken pundit, Chris Sutton has never been afraid to speak his mind and is generally not overly complimentary about his old rivals. However, while speaking on the Record Celtic podcast, he said he still believes Rangers can win the league.
He said: “I’m sure Rohl is (going to bring in more players), I don’t know what he’s thinking about the centre-forward position, but he chops and changes so much, so it’ll be interesting to see how many players he brings in. I still think that there’s a possibility that Rangers can win the league. They’re hanging on in there. I think it’s all about who wins the arms race in January that will win the league”
Rangers fans will be hoping that their January window is better than the summer equivalent, with several new additions still struggling to find their feet. Russell Martin spent £10m on former Everton man, Youssef Chermiti, the most the Light Blues have spent on a player in 25 years, but so far he has only registered one goal to his name.
A busy new year
As 2026 fast approaches, Rohl already has his eye on some new Rangers additions. The most prominent of which is Genk defender, Mujaid Sadick, who played at Ibrox already this season when the Belgian side beat Rangers 1-0 in the Europa League.
While defensive reinforcements will be welcomed in Govan, the side are also crying out for an out and out striker. The three current number nines, Chermiti, Danilo and Bojan Miovski have only registered five goals between them so far this season.
It won’t just be incomings Rohl has to deal with in January, but outgoings as well, as a number of Rangers stars are clearly out of favour with the German boss. Nedim Bajrami hasn’t featured on the pitch so far for the German boss and is looking to get more minutes with a potential World Cup around the corner for his native Albania.
