Liverpool are keeping an eye on Brazilian youngster Gabriel Mec, according to information first revealed by journalist Kaliel Dorneles from Rádio Bandeirantes.
The Merseyside club have reportedly sought details about the Grêmio midfielder’s contract while monitoring his performances at the ongoing Under-17 World Cup.
Mec, who is under contract with Grêmio until June 2027, has a release clause of €50m (£43m) for foreign clubs. Internally, the Brazilian side expect at least €20m (£17m) if they decide to sell him in the future.
In his YouTube channel, Dorneles added that Liverpool’s scouts are watching him closely in Qatar, with no formal offer yet but clear interest in keeping tabs on his development.
Chelsea had already come close to signing Mec last year, with a deal falling apart in the final stages. Shakhtar Donetsk also made a €13m (£11.3m) bid recently, but the player rejected a move to Ukraine. The likes of Porto and Zenit have also made inquiries, showing how highly rated the teenager is among European clubs.
Known for his pace, technique and two-footed ability, Mec plays mainly as a central attacking midfielder, but can also operate on either flank. He is regarded as one of Grêmio’s brightest prospects and one of the standout Brazilian names to follow at the Under-17 World Cup.
The next few months could determine whether Liverpool or any other European side turn their interest into a concrete move.
