Burnley star pulls out of international squad – ‘Illness’ ruins hopes of staking claim

Burnley star Quilindschy Hartman has been forced to pull out of international duty with the Netherlands.

[That’s according to Voetbal International.](https://www.vi.nl/nieuws/tweede-afvaller-bij-oranje-koeman-ziet-na-weghorst-ook-hartman-afhaken) They report that the left-back has been sent back to Burnley because of an ‘illness’.

The newspaper explains that Hartman has dropped out of the Netherlands squad ahead of Friday’s World Cup qualifier with Poland. He is the second player to do so this week after Wout Weghorst also returned to his club.

Hartman is ‘ill’, although the nature of the illness isn’t made clear. He has therefore returned to Burnley and won’t play for the Netherlands in this break. That means he’ll miss out on potentially making his sixth international appearance for the Dutch.

He has only been back in the group since the last international break. That marked a return after nearly two years out of the picture. He came on as a substitute against Malta in that break.

The left-back has been impressing with Burnley since his move to Turf Moor in the summer. And he’s made it clear he wants to be a part of Koeman’s squad for the World Cup next summer.

This break was perhaps his chance to stake a real claim, particularly with Micky van de Ven continuing to impress for Tottenham as well. He is currently the first choice left back for the Netherlands despite being a centre-back for Spurs.

Earlier this week, the player made clear he [sees the Clarets as a stepping stone](https://sportwitness.co.uk/burnley-star-continues-to-make-transfer-plans-clear-clarets-only-a-stop-gap/) and international would help that.

Instead, the Burnley man has been forced to drop out, something we’re sure he’ll be very disappointed about.
