Ederson’s return to the Brazil squad marks his first call-up since leaving Manchester City for Fenerbahçe in the summer. Speaking to Globo Esporte, the 32-year-old goalkeeper reflected on the reasons behind his move and praised Carlo Ancelotti’s work with the national team.
After almost a decade in Manchester, the goalkeeper decided it was time to turn the page and seek a fresh challenge. As he put it:“I had eight wonderful years wearing City’s shirt and I won 18 trophies, but I needed some fresh air.”
Ederson said he felt it was simply time for a change after successful years in blue.“All cycles come to an end, players come and go, and the club always stays,” he said.
Before reflecting on his ambitions in Turkey, Ederson made it clear that his decision to leave Manchester City was not about lowering his standards, but about renewing his motivation.
“When Fenerbahçe appeared, I embraced it. I’ve kept the same mentality and work routine that I had at City. I still want to win. I did it at City and Benfica, and I want to do it at Fenerbahçe too”, he completed.
The goalkeeper added that the move reignited his passion for the game.“Sometimes new challenges bring new energy and positive things into your life. I’m breathing football again and feeling the atmosphere of the Turkish games, which is crazy. I’m really happy with this challenge, and I hope to help Fenerbahçe win a national title again.”

He also admitted he had already tried to leave Manchester City a season earlier but stayed longer than planned.“That affected my performance a bit. I had five injuries and wasn’t at my best level. It’s no use being at a great club if you’re not happy. That would have kept affecting me,” he explained.
Before the move, Ederson spoke with Brazil’s goalkeeping coach Claudio Taffarel and several compatriots who had played in Turkey.“Taffarel spoke wonders about the country, and others told me great things about the club and the culture. I’m enjoying this new country, this new league, and this new life.”
