[Edson Alvarez](https://www.claretandhugh.info/__trashed-19/) joined Fenerbahçe on loan from West Ham in August 2025, primarily as Graham Potter decided the player didn’t fit into his system, even after being voted the player of the tournament in the Gold Cup having captained the Mexico team to their tenth CONCACAF Gold Cup title in 2025.
Following an injury that kept Alvarez out for 5 games he is now quickly becoming a key figure in the midfield for Fenerbahçe, which has not gone unnoticed by Nuno Espírito Santo.
West Ham’s manager plans to welcome Alvarez back into the fold

His leadership was evident as he guided a relatively young Mexican squad through challenging fixtures. His ability to rise in crucial moments—literally, with two goals from headers—cemented his reputation as a key performer.

_West Ham midfielder Alvarez – Nuno can bring him back in the summer_
Alvarez’ defensive midfield role has been crucial in Fenerbahçe’s structure. His average rating of 6.78 in the Süper Lig reflects consistent performances, and his physical presence adds strength to the team’s spine – though he has picked up his obligatory yellow cards- four so far!
I wrote for C&H back in August that I felt West Ham were offloading the wrong player – Alvarez’s stats were over and above those of his fellow midfielders at the club – top for tackles per game, interceptions, pass completions, ball recoveries and second to Soucek for aerial duels.
His performances at Fenerbahçe and in the Gold Cup reflect a player at the peak of his powers—disciplined, commanding, and inspirational. Another Potter howler, by the look of things. Thankfully, the Turkish club only have an option to buy the player, and reports suggest they wish to negotiate down on price.
As such with a contract running to 30th June 2028 it is likely Nuno will integrate the player back into the first team fold next summer, should West Ham remain in the Premier League.
