Newcastle United star Joelinton was dealt a double blow ahead of the November international break as he missed out on the Brazil squad and suffered an injury.
The Brazilian had gone down on a couple of occasions before finally being withdrawn midway through the first half.
Explaining the change, Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe said: “Joelinton, I'm not sure, looked like a knock, but I haven't had a full discussion or debrief from the medical team on him.”
But it is hoped the midfielder will make a recovery and be back involved for Newcastle when they return to Premier League action against Manchester City on November 22 at St James’ Park.
Joelinton had been hoping for a second successive Brazil call-up under Carlo Ancelotti having featured in the 3-2 defeat to Japan in Tokyo last month. But the Newcastle star was snubbed for the friendly matches against Senegal and Tunisia this month.
His Newcastle teammate Bruno Guimaraes has proven himself a key player for Brazil in recent years and is currently away with the national team as they prepare for next year’s World Cup in North America. Although Guimaraes is likely to be part of the Brazil squad for the second World Cup running, Joelinton’s spot is far from certain.
At 29, it could be the Newcastle No. 7’s last realistic opportunity of representing his country at the World Cup.
But for now, Joelinton has put those worries to the back of his mind as he’s shared holiday photos from Brazil with his wife, Thays Gondim.

After a difficult start to the Premier League season has left Newcastle sitting 14th in the table and two points above the relegation zone following successive league defeats, the club’s non-international players have been given some time off during the international break.
Sven Botman was pictured on holiday in Morocco with his daughter, Giulia, in a photo shared by his partner, Chana Kesselaar on Instagram this week.
Joelinton looking to deliver for NUFC
Joelinton has proven himself as a key player over the past four years at Newcastle under Eddie Howe. The Brazilian has transformed himself from a misfiring striker into a combative midfielder and an eight-time Brazil international.
But in order to have a chance of earning more caps and going away to the World Cup with Brazil, Joelinton will first have to deliver at club level.
He hasn’t scored in the Premier League so far in 2025 but have found the net twice in the Carabao Cup and last time out in the Champions League so far this season.
Newcastle head coach Howe has put the onus on his midfield players and wingers to contribute more goals and assists following the departure of last season’s top scorer, Alexander Isak.
