Club statement as Leeds United hero earns end-of-season opportunity in Spain

Inside Elland Road: Defensive solidity is vital for Leeds Utd

Leeds United hero Pablo Hernandez' stellar start to life in senior management has earned him a longer crack at the job.

The former Whites wizard was appointed interim manager of CD Castellón after their poor start to the season. He came into the post in mid-September and has lost just twice in eight games in charge.

The Spanish second tier side, who now sit 12th in the 22-team table, have confirmed that he will remain as head coach for the rest of this season.

A club statement said: "Following the news on the morning of 12 November, CD Castellón wishes to confirm that Pablo Hernández will remain as a head coach until the end of the 2025/2026 season.

"Pablo took the reins of the albinegro team as a caretaker on 16 September. So far, the Castellón-born coach has achieved four wins, two draws and two defeats in the eight matches he has led the team in LaLiga Hypermotion. In those matches, the team has scored nine goals and conceded only five.

"CD Castellón is delighted with Pablo’s work so far and is confident that he will continue in the same vein throughout the Second Division season. Let’s go for the match against Real Sociedad B!"

Hernandez made a perfect start with three wins on the bounce, before a draw against Eibar and a three-game losing streak in which they were defeated by a single goal. But a 2-1 win at home to Malaga and a point away at Burgos followed. Not long after he settled into his new position Hernandez revealed that he was taking inspiration on the training ground from what he learned under Marcelo Bielsa at Thorp Arch during their time together.

"“They’re drills we do in training, and Bielsa used to tell us they could be perfectly applied to matches on the pitch," said the Spaniard. "They’re drills that, at first glance, make you wonder what they’re for, but then you realise everything has a purpose. They translate perfectly to Sundays [matchdays]."
