Opinion: What Newcastle are thinking of doing with Antonio Cordero now should please fans

Newcastle United are reportedly ready to take action amid Antonio Cordero’s struggles on loan at KVC Westerlo.

Cordero joined Newcastle United from Malaga on a free transfer earlier this summer amid much excitement.

Indeed, Barcelona made a late move to sign Cordero but failed as Newcastle won the race to an exciting teenage talent.

The winger joined the Belgian side on loan in August but things haven’t gone to plan since.

Disappointingly, Cordero is struggling on loan at Westerlo. This season, the 18-year-old has made only seven appearances, and none of those have come from the start.

With that in mind, comments from journalist Matteo Moretto are particularly interesting.

Newcastle United consider terminating Antonio Cordero’s loan

Speaking to Radio Marca, Moretto revealed that Newcastle were considering whether to step in and take drastic action.

According to Moretto, the Magpies could look to terminate Cordero’s loan in Belgium due to his lack of game time.

Newcastle United fans saw Antonio Cordero struggles coming, but they must now be pleased

Questions still need to be asked about why Cordero was sent there of all places. Given the likes of Ajax were credited with a loan interest in the player, it seemed like a strange move.

In fact, Newcastle fans claimed Cordero was being sent to the wrong club when he joined Westerlo in August.

The best thing Newcastle can do is cancel the loan. It’s hard to know exactly what has gone on there but keeping him there for the sake of it could be detrimental to his long-term development.

Newcastle expected Cordero to play more often at Westerlo, but that just hasn’t proven to be the case.

Interestingly, Newcastle insiders think Cordero could become a better player than their former forward, Ayoze Perez.

The longer he stays at a loan club that may not be doing much for his development, the further he is from acting on that potential.

Newcastle’s loan strategy has been criticised by supporters in recent seasons but if they take action here, it should go down well amongst fans after finally putting their foot down.
