Two head coaches have already been fired this season, and more might be on the way in the not-too-distant future. Unsurprisingly, Washington Commanders offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury is already being strongly linked to a second opportunity as the leading man.
Kingsbury stated last year that it would have to be a fantastic opportunity to leave the Commanders and superstar quarterback Jayden Daniels. But with Washington struggling to meet expectations, and massive changes on the horizon once again this offseason, the play-caller might decide to be more receptive to offers during the upcoming hiring cycle.
Dan Quinn will be well aware of this, and the head coach should be forming contingency plans when — or if — Kingsbury takes his chances elsewhere. He'll have several candidates in mind, but someone with an already close bond with the respected leader could be at the top of his list.
Commanders could turn to Mike McDaniel for their new OC if he's fired by the Dolphins
The Commanders are in Spain for an international clash with the Miami Dolphins before their bye week. Their head coach, Mike McDaniel, made no secret of the impact Quinn had on his career — something that he'll always be grateful for. This was reflected in his heartfelt comments about Washington's man in charge.
"Dan Quinn holds a special place in my heart, in my career. He was there —ground zero — when I became sober, supported me, believed in me, and gave me the opportunity to continue what I want to do. For that, I will forever be indebted to him. I think it speaks to the type of man he is and the type of leader he is. I know he touches every player he coaches from a true, authentic standpoint. And I think the Commanders are very fortunate to have him."
Mike McDaniel
Now, a lot has to happen beforehand. But if the Commanders are looking for a new offensive coordinator next year, and McDaniels is removed by the Dolphins, there are far worse avenues Quinn could go down.
McDaniel remains on the hot seat despite Miami's win over the Buffalo Bills. They have already fired general manager Chris Grier, so a new front-office leader might want his own guy to build from the ground up. Then, Kingsbury needs to get a head-coaching gig. That's how the pieces of this possible scenario need to fall into place.
Although McDaniel has been criticized this season in Miami, he remains an innovative offensive play-caller. Having him run Washington's offense with Daniels leading the charge is a mouthwatering proposition. And based on the esteem in which he holds Quinn, he'd likely jump at the chance to work with him again.
Time will tell on all fronts.
