Antoine Semenyo transfer latest: New claims quashed over Liverpool target

Antoine Semenyo has not requested a transfer from Bournemouth in January but is a firm target for Liverpool as they look to further bolster their attacking line.

Semenyo’s future at Bournemouth is poised to become a major story in the weeks and months to come – and Liverpool are involved in that.

That comes with claims on social media that, amid interest from Anfield, the winger had handed in a transfer request ahead of the January window.

However the Mail‘s Lewis Steele and Sky Sports’ Mark McAdams – reliable sources for Liverpool and Bournemouth respectively – have both insisted that is false.

Liverpool could accelerate move for Semenyo

Despite that update, a move to Liverpool is certainly not ruled out.

Steele explains that the Premier League champions are “certainly keen to sign him in the summer” before going on to discuss the possibility of “bringing forward” their plans for the off-season.

That has been the case in the past, with deals for Luis Diaz and Cody Gakpo prime examples amid interest from Tottenham and Man United respectively.

But Steele adds: “The noises from Liverpool suggest [any January signing] is more unlikely than likely at this stage.”

What has Antoine Semenyo done to warrant Liverpool’s interest?

Semenyo has only further enhanced his reputation as one of the best attackers in the Premier League this season with six goals and three assists in 11 games so far – only Erling Haaland has more combined.

He has blanked in his past four appearances in the league but that comes in a team-wide slump for Andoni Iraola’s side, who have lost back-to-back games against Man City and Aston Villa.

The Ghana international netted 13 goals and assisted a further seven in 42 outings last term, and overall since joining from Bristol City there is no major anomaly in his genuine output (25 non-penalty goals) and his expected output (17.9npxG).

That suggests he is not only consistently performing at the level expected but that his upward trajectory displays a real improvement rather than any hot streak or luck in front of goal.

Semenyo can play in any position in the forward line and though a natural right winger has operated almost as frequently on the left for Bournemouth.

This would certainly suit Liverpool, who will be seeking a long-term replacement for Mohamed Salah on the right but also flexibility in a forward line which, going forward, will need to incorporate Alexander Isak, Hugo Ekitike and Florian Wirtz among others.

Ghana are not qualified for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations which means that, if Semenyo were to join mid-season, he would not miss any domestic fixtures due to its overlap.
