Sheffield Wednesday's Henrik Pedersen explains his Owls changes
Jacob Murphy spent the duration of the 2019/20 season on loan at Sheffield Wednesday, scoring nine goals.
Defender Dominic Iorfa is not surprised former Sheffield Wednesday loanee Jacob Murphy has forged a successful Premier League career for himself at Newcastle United after including him in his all-time Owls squad.
Wednesday swooped for Murphy on the final day of the 2019 summer transfer window, signing him on a season-long loan deal from Newcastle, to strengthen their attacking options.
Despite scoring just two minutes into his Owls debut against Barnsley, helping Wednesday seal a 2-0 win over their South Yorkshire rivals at Hillsborough, Murphy struggled to deliver the goods in the first half of what turned out to be a campaign unlike any other because of the coronavirus pandemic.
However, Murphy kicked on in the second half of the season and brought the curtain down on his loan spell in S6 having scored nine goals and registered six assists in 44 appearances in league and cup.
Following the success of his campaign at Hillsborough, Murphy forced his way into the Newcastle team after returning to St James’ Park and has been a regular fixture ever since, racking up 190 appearances.
Scoring ten goals and registering 13 assists in the Premier League alone since the beginning of last term, it has come as no surprise to Iorfa, who put Murphy on the right-wing in his all-time Owls XI from the players he has played alongside since joining the club back in 2019.
Iorfa lauds Murphy
“This was tough as well because there was a few to choose from,” Iorfa began, selecting his right-winger in a video shared on the club’s YouTube channel. “Although I only had a short stint with him - I only played with him for one season - I have gone with Jacob Murphy.
“He came on loan and in the first half of the season, and he would probably say this himself, he didn’t really hit the heights he wanted to, struggling a little bit. But in the second half of the season he showed his quality and was unplayable.
“In terms of how he was in the second half of the season, it was unbelievable, to be fair, and you can see how he is doing now in the Premier League. It is no surprise because that was how he was performing for us here in that second half of the season.
“He is such an athlete, he has quality, he works really hard, his crossing was really good and he was another guy who was really good to have around the dressing room as well.”
