The young [Black Cats](https://www.thenorthernecho.co.uk/sport/football/sunderland/?ref=ed_direct) won 7-1 at the Stadium of Light on Wednesday night to move to four points after two games of this year's competition.
And Murty thanked the senior stars who joined his ranks for the night and played an "invaluable" role on and off the pitch.
Neil and O'Nien both starred for Sunderland in last year's Championship promotion winning campaign but have been fringe figures in the Premier League.
Neil has so far been limited to just two minutes of league action, while O'Nien hasn't yet kicked a ball since returning from the shoulder injury he suffered in May's play-off final win over Sheffield United.

Cirkin, meanwhile, has missed the first three months of the season through injury but took another big forward step in his recovery with a midweek run-out.
Cirkin returned to action for the Under-21s last week with a 45-minute outing against Ipswich, and followed that by getting an hour under his belt against Bilbao.
The left-back scored one and created another of the seven goals, with Regis Le Bris watching on in the stands. Neil was also on the scoresheet, with both players in line to get a first team opportunity when several Sunderland stars head away to the African Cup of Nations next month.
Reinildo will link up with Mozambique, which could give Cirkin an opportunity in the side, while Neil will be desperate to take any chance he gets with Noah Sadiki and Habib Diarra both set to miss a string of Sunderland games.
Le Bris will be pleased all three senior players managed to get some match minutes under their belt, and Murty was delighted to have them on board.
He said: "It's great for us. I think the best evidence we can give the fans is when we come in at half-time for a debrief, we open up the floor to the players and the players were waxing lyrical about the level of communication and organisation that the first team players bring.
"The way that they demand the jump into the press, the way they understand the triggers, the way they play the game. They play it so quickly and see things so quickly.
"As much as we want to talk about communication and growing a voice, to have the level of positive modelling that we get from those guys is really invaluable.
"I really want to thank them for approaching the game in the correct manner and delivering a professional and first level intensity to everything they do.
"I don't think being the people they are they can do anything different. They're just top people and we're thoroughly grateful to have them."
A double from Jake Waters and goals from Jaydon Jones, Timur Tutierov and Ben Middlemas, as well as Cirkin and Neil, secured the emphatic victory.
Murty said: "The way we approached the game, started the game, the structure and the intensity of the press set a really good foundation to go on.
"The seven goals was a really good reward for their work. We showed a level of ruthlessness and composure in our finishing that potentially was missing earlier this season.
"Some of our play was exceptional. I hope the fans who came along and watched it on YouTube thoroughly enjoyed it, because I did."
