Rookie center Ryan Kalkbrenner continues to impress in his first NBA season. Despite being a second-round pick, Kalkbrenner earned the starting center job for the Charlotte Hornets on opening night and has not relinquished it since.
The past 48 hours have been especially eventful for the 23-year-old. Kalkbrenner and his wife welcomed their first child on Tuesday, marking a life-changing moment for the young family. With little rest and plenty of emotion, Kalkbrenner still suited up for Charlotte’s matchup against the Milwaukee Bucks on Wednesday night — and delivered one of his best performances of the season.
Even with Giannis Antetokounmpo sidelined, Milwaukee remained a challenge thanks to Ryan Rollins and Myles Turner. Kalkbrenner rose to the occasion, finishing second on the team in scoring with 17 points while shooting a perfect 8-for-8 from the field. He also grabbed nine rebounds and blocked three shots, continuing to showcase his trademark efficiency and rim protection.
Through the early part of his rookie campaign, Kalkbrenner ranks first in the NBA in field goal percentage and second in blocks, trailing only Victor Wembanyama.
After the game, an exhausted but joyful Kalkbrenner met with reporters to reflect on the whirlwind two days. “I definitely didn’t get enough sleep last night to play with as much energy as I thought I did,” he said, smiling. “I’m just glad I was able to be here and help the team.”
He also credited his wife for encouraging him to play. “She told me, ‘I think you should play tonight; it’d be a good distraction to watch the game.’”
Kalkbrenner and the Hornets will have Thursday off before traveling to Milwaukee for a rematch with the Bucks on Friday.
