Steven Gerrard's next job is 'absolutely vital' for the former Liverpool great with his managerial career at a crossroads.

That's according to former Scotland international Ally McCoist who has floated the idea of Gerrard succeeding Daniel Farke at Leeds United.

Farke, who just six months ago lead the Whites to the Championship title a club record points tally, has already found his future the subject of speculation.

That's because United enter the third international break of the season on the back of successive defeats at Brighton and Nottingham Forest, but more worryingly two poor performances.

Farke's side were easily beaten at the City Ground and now stand just a point outside the bottom three, with some commentators citing his top flight record at Norwich City as a cause for concern.

Typically other names have been floated, with McCoist the latest to offer up Gerrard's.

“Would Steven Gerrard be interested in the Leeds job?" the Scot said on talkSPORT. "You’ve got to appreciate there is someone in the Leeds job.

"It is really important for Steven, his next appointment. It’s absolutely vital for him."

Gerrard's name crops up ten months after he left Al-Ettifaq having guided them to sixth in the Saudi Pro League.

His only other managerial positions came at Rangers, whom he guided to an unbeaten Scottish Premiership title in 2021 before leaving for Aston Villa.

He lasted less than a year at Villa Park, finishing 14th in 2022 before being dismissed in October the next season with Villa 17th in the table.

It seemed likely he would return to Ibrox just last month but opted against the idea after Russell Martin's departure.
