Leeds United loanee Mateo Joseph settles if the Premier League is better than La Liga

Leeds United loanee Mateo Joseph has given his opinion on whether he believes La Liga is better than the Premier League as he continues to enjoy his loan spell at RCD Mallorca.

Mateo Joseph was one of the players who left Leeds following their promotion to the Premier League, having spent much of their promotion campaign as a peripheral player in the squad.

Having joined Mallorca on a season-long loan, Joseph is spending the year experiencing La Liga, as he looks to get his fledgling career back on track.

The talented forward has been operating on the right of a front three in La Liga, and Joseph recently admitted that he is open to leaving Leeds in the summer if a deal can be agreed.

Now, the Spanish youth international has given his view on whether La Liga is a better league than the Premier League, having spent nearly half a season in the competition.

Speaking to Spanish publication Marca, Joseph has spoken about the differences between playing in England and in Spain.

According to Joseph, although English teams have enjoyed some success against Spanish sides in this year’s European competitions, the historic success of Spanish sides means that La Liga should not be underestimated in the comparison.

Joseph said: “There’s a difference in how the games are played. I wouldn’t say the Premier League is superior to the Spanish league.

“I think that in this season’s Champions League matches, there have been more victories for English teams.

“But if we look back a bit, we see that Spanish teams have achieved more victories in Europe.”

Mateo Joseph declares his allegiance to Spain at international level

Joseph played age-group football for England, representing the nation at the 2023 FIFA Under-23 World Cup, and is related to former England player Emile Heskey.

However, he has since gone on to represent Spain at under-21 level, playing 13 times and scoring eight goals in the process.

Having moved to La Liga to play his senior football, Joseph has now confirmed that he would choose to play for Spain if he were given the option to play for the two nations at international level.

Asked if he would choose Spain over England by Marca, Joseph continued: “Yes, without a doubt. Since I was little, my dream has been to live in Spain, and that’s another dream worth fighting for.”
