Newcastle United are hoping to have Yoane Wissa fit and available to make his debut following the November international break.

Days after joining Newcastle, Wissa went away on international duty and started two games in four days for DR Congo, suffering a knee injury in the second match - a 3-2 defeat to Senegal.

Wissa hasn’t been in action since and indeed hasn’t featured at club level since May after missing Brentford’s pre-season matches as well as the start of the 2025/26 Premier League campaign.

The forward scored 19 Premier League goals for The Bees last season and was signed by Newcastle to help ease the transition after selling Alexander Isak to Liverpool for £130million. Nick Woltemade was also brought in and has scored six goals in 12 starts following his club-record £65million arrival from VfB Stuttgart, while Wissa has been forced to watch on from the stands.

Discussing Wissa’s recovery and return to fitness, Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe said heading into the break: “Yoane's working well. He's on the grass, he's building his fitness. I think the knee's feeling good, no problems with that.

“It's more a case of looking at his fitness, sharpness, all the things that he's going to need to put together. He's in a good place injury-wise now to really kick on and push his body.

“But we're going to need to give him time to get fit and robust enough. And in a position where he can give his best version of himself for the team. So, how long that takes is slightly unclear. But yeah, I'm sure it'll be worth the wait.”

Last month, Newcastle striker William Osula filmed Wissa on a treatment table at the training ground as he told the former Brentford forward: “They [the fans] want you bro.”

Wissa replied: “Why do you want me?”

Osula added: “The fans, they want you.”

That prompted an injury return tease from Wissa, who said: “Soon, soon, soon.”

Howe has also hinted that Wissa would need a six-week ‘pre-season’ schedule to get up to speed once he returns to full training.

But a photo emerged on social media showing Wissa taking part in individual training at Darsley Park while his teammates prepared to take on his former club, Brentford, on Sunday.

Wissa hasn’t gone away with DR Congo during the November international break in order to focus on his return to fitness at Newcastle.

With no guarantee on his return date, The Magpies will be hoping to see him in action sooner rather than later, given that he could miss up to seven more games should he go away with DR Congo to the African Cup of Nations next month.

While Wissa is in individual training and not training fully with the first-team, it’s understood his wages can be covered by the FIFA Club Protection Programme due to his injury being sustained while on international duty.
