The New York Giants have a head coach opening following the firing of Brian Daboll. An NFL legend is trending to replace him.

Bill Belichick is considered a frontrunner to land the gig. The Giants will exploit a buyout clause in his current contract if they want to make him leave North Carolina.

Belichick was hired by the Tar Heels in the offseason following his lengthy run at the professional level. It represented his first college head coaching job.

To this point, many would view the marriage as a failure. The coach, and his girlfriend, have created much drama in Chapel Hill.

On-field results have not been good enough to justify the headache.

Bill Belichick has been a letdown.

Some expected immediate success. Others tempered expectations for Year 1. Not many anticipate the brutal start experienced by the Tar Heels under the coach’s leadership.

North Carolina lost five of its first seven games. The team was outscored 158-67 in those setbacks. The Tar Heels did not pick up a win against Power 4 competition until Halloween.

Nine games into the season, UNC is 4-5. As a matchup against Wake Forest looms, another distraction has presented itself.

Belichick is trending as a candidate for the New York Giants. He might soon have an out to end his unsuccessful stint at the college level.

Belichick was asked about the opening this week. He would neither confirm nor deny interest.

“Getting ready for Wake Forest, that’s all I got this week,” he said during his most recent press conference.

Will the Giants hire North Carolina’s football coach?

That is the question currently surrounding the franchise’s coaching search. New York’s interest level to this point is unclear. With that said, money will not be an issue in making a move.

In fact, the Tar Heels made things much easier for Bill Belichick to leave when structuring his contract. His buyout clause dropped significantly after just six months on the job.

The coach was hired in December of 2024. His buyout at that time was $10 million should he opt to leave for a new job. That total dropped to just $1 million after June 1, 2025.

If they want him, they can get him – and for relatively cheap all things considered.

There are many that believe Belichick would jump at the opportunity to coach in New York. Long-time insider Gary Myers had the following to say about his interest.

“He loves the Giants. I mean he loves the Giants. He gets emotional and melancholy reminiscing about his Giant years… I think Belichick would do it in a second.”

-Gary Myers

Myers suggests that Belichick wants to return to the NFL and win a Super Bowl without the help of Tom Brady. He also noted the coach’s relationship with co-owner John Mara.

Will it happen? The depends on whether or not the Giants believe Belichick is worth pursuing.

Money will not play a role in prying him away from Chapel Hill should that be the ultimate goal.
