Ex-NFL star released from jail, awaits attempted murder trial

Former NFL star wide receiver Antonio Brown was released from a jail in Miami on Thursday after he pleaded not guilty to second-degree attempted murder.

Brown, 37, was released from Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center on $25,000 bail. He was ordered to wear a GPS ankle monitor by Circuit Judge Mindy Glazer while he awaits his trial date, which is to be determined, the Associated Press reports. He faces a sentence of up to 15 years in prison and a $10,000 fine, if convicted.

An attempted murder charge against Brown stems from an altercation outside a celebrity boxing event in Miami on May 16.

That night, officers responded to a report of gunshots being fired outside the Brand Risk Warehouse in Miami. In video posted to social media, Brown is seen fighting with several people in the parking lot before gunshots can be heard after the scuffle.

He is accused of taking a handgun from a security guard and firing two shots at a man he had fought with earlier that night, police said. A bystander, Zul-Qarnain Kwame Nantamu, told police that one of the bullets fired by Brown struck his neck.

However, Brown’s attorneys argued that the police affidavit is incorrect. They said Brown used his own firearm and did not aim the shots fired at any person, per the AP.

Brown was found with no weapon on him at the scene when searched by authorities, who also found two bullet shell casings and an empty gun holster at the scene, according to an arrest warrant.

Following the incident, Brown took to social media to explain what happened, saying he was attacked by several men who were attempting to rob him.

Brown played 12 seasons in the NFL from 2010-21 for the Pittsburgh Steelers, New England Patriots and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He earned seven Pro Bowl selections and four consecutive First Team All-Pro selections from 2014-17 while with Pittsburgh. He twice led the NFL in receptions and receiving yards, and once led the league in receiving touchdowns.

Brown finished his NFL career with 928 receptions for 12,291 yards and 83 touchdowns in 146 games played.
