Ohio State Buckeyes coach Ryan Day has proven to be among the best coaches in college football throughout his eight-year tenure at the program. However, if he happens to want to move to the next level, ESPN NFL analyst Dan Orlovsky believes that Day would be the perfect candidate for a “phenomenal” NFL job.
Daboll’s firing earlier this week has quickly sparked speculation as to who may ultimately replace him. Interestingly, some names from the college coaching ranks, including Lane Kiffin and Bill Belichick, have been rumored to potentially be candidates for the position.
While the likes of Kiffin and Belichick are certainly intriguing names, Dan Orlovsky believes that Day would actually make the best candidate coming from the college ranks, calling him a “phenomenal” coach that could translate nicely to coaching in the NFL.
“I'll give you two names," Orlovsky said on ESPN’s “Get Up, via On3 Sports. “These are names that I would like for the Giants. Realistic or not, I don't know that. One would be Kevin Stefanski, if they move on in Cleveland. A second name. I would love Ryan Day there. I think Ryan Day would be a phenomenal head coach. I just think he's a great coach.”
It’s hard to argue with Orlovsky’s assessment that Day would be an excellent candidate for the Giants to at the very least look into.
That being said, there is certainly no guarantee that Day would even have any interest in leaving his position at Ohio State in favor of a head coaching job with a Giants team that has plenty of holes to fill.
The Ohio State coaching job is undoubtedly one of the most sought-after jobs in the sport. Despite some ridiculous rumors that Day may be on the hot seat if they lose to Michigan again this year, it sure seems like Day’s job security is as stable as any coach in the country.
We have seen elite-level college coaches make the jump to the NFL coaching ranks when the ideal opportunity presents itself. Look no further than Day’s old rival, Jim Harbaugh, leaving Michigan to coach the Los Angeles Chargers and star quarterback Justin Herbert.
Maybe if Day believes in rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart, we may indeed see the defending National Champion follow in Harbaugh’s footsteps. Though on paper, it sure seems like the Giants would have to make a pretty great pitch to lure Day away from Columbus.
