Wolves have the chance to do some incoming and outgoing transfer business in the January window
Wolves will hope Rob Edwards can inspire them to an upturn in form in the Premier League. The Midlands club are bottom of the table and are winless after their first 11 fixtures. They were beaten 3-0 away by Chelsea in their last game before the international break.
Edwards has left Middlesbrough in the Championship to take over from Vitor Pereira at Molineux. He has also managed the likes of Forest Green Rovers, Watford and Luton Town in the past. The Hatters were promoted from the second tier in 2023 under his guidance.
Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes wanted by Manchester United
According to the Daily Mail, Manchester United are ‘monitoring’ Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes this winter. The Red Devils are being linked with a swoop for the player ahead of the January transfer window. Ruben Amorim is looking to bolster his options in the middle of the park at Old Trafford.
Gomes, 24, is under contract until 2030 so there is no immediate pressure to sell him anytime soon. He moved to England back in 2023 and has since adapted well to life in his new country. Prior to his switch, he rose up through the academy at Flamengo and broke into their first-team as a youngster before leaving South Ameria.
The Brazil international, who has 10 caps to his name, has made 98 appearances for Wolves in all competitions, nine of which have come this season, and he has chipped in with seven goals. He injects quality into their starting XI and they won’t want to lose him, especially mid-way through a campaign to a team in the same division like United. However, their hands may be tied in the future, especially if they are relegated down to the second tier.
What now for Joao Gomes at Wolves?
Wolves will be eager to keep hold of Gomes for as long as possible. He is an important player and Edwards will want to get the best out of him over the coming weeks. Their resolve may be tested if an offer came in from United in January.
Following their loss to Burnley last month, Gomes took to social media to send a message to fans. He posted on his X account: “We haven't won a game in the premier league for a long time and you still fill the stadium every game, what can we tell you? 90% of the fans of other teams would have already abandoned us, but you are still here and yours will continue. Just thank you, we promise to work hard and give our best.”
Wolves have since made the decision to part ways with Pereira after their poor run of form. They are in the drop zone along with West Ham and Nottingham Forest and face an uphill battle for survival. They are eight points from safety already behind Burnley in 17th. Edwards has managed in the top flight before with Luton but wasn’t able to keep the Hatters up and they went down.
