A Silver Lining To Chicago’s Four Game Losing Streak

The Chicago Bulls shocked the entire NBA world through seven games. They stood at 6-1, with wins over the New York Knicks in NBA Cup action, the Detroit Pistons on opening night, and the Philadelphia 76ers to claim first place in the Eastern Conference. Since that night, things have come crashing down to reality. They dropped a close decision to the Milwaukee Bucks in their second NBA Cup group play game, followed by a loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers the next night. On Monday night, they blew a late fourth-quarter lead to the San Antonio Spurs to mark three losses in a row. Wednesday’s loss to Detroit brings their record to 6-5, still a better standing than many would have anticipated coming into the regular season. Two positive notes still give the Bulls hope and signify that an end to the losing streak is in sight.

Most Difficult Schedule In The NBA So Far

A four-game losing streak rarely features good news. In Chicago’s case, there are two things to remember. First, the Bulls have had the most challenging schedule in the league through 11 games. They’ve played the 9-2 Detroit Pistons twice, the 7-3 New York Knicks, the 7-4 Milwaukee Bucks and Philadelphia 76ers, and the 8-2 San Antonio Spurs. Over half of their matchups have been against the top-eight records in the NBA. Any Bulls fan would have been thrilled before the season began if told they’d start 6-5 with these circumstances.

Regaining Their Two Best Players

Another important note regarding Chicago’s recent struggles is that Coby White has yet to play this season. He’s been their leading scorer over the last two years and is the most potent offensive weapon on the roster. He is due back within the next week and will provide an offensive threat that has not been present this year. Josh Giddey has also missed two games this week, another addition that will significantly alter the current product. He’s nearly averaging a triple-double nightly, with over 20 points per night. He was also top-six on the latest NBA MVP ladder before going down to injury.

When Coby White returns, the team will have to readjust. But let’s be real: you’re going to need a nuclear scorer like Coby when the elite Western teams come calling. He’s the only Bull who bends a defense 35 feet from the hoop. His return won’t hurt — it’ll make everyone better. pic.twitter.com/MtGdaXliQy

The combination of a much easier slate of games and the addition of their two most talented players will turn the Bulls’ losing ways around. Many are quick to forget that White was the best player on the team last spring, and Giddey’s absence this week has entirely altered the impressive product that was seen through the first few weeks. Although it has been a rough week in Chicago, there is light at the end of the tunnel.
