ALLEN PARK -- The Detroit Lions are coming off an explosive offensive showing with Dan Campbell calling the plays last week.
But they’ve got quite the challenge ahead with a trip to face the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday night up next. The Campbell-led offense dropped 44 points, 500-plus yards of offense and scored on all eight possessions against the Washington Commanders.
Now, they’ll face a stiffer challenge against the reigning Super Bowl champions on the road in one of the NFL’s most daunting environments. The NFC East-leading Eagles are fresh off beating the Green Bay Packers on Monday night, helping push the Lions back into first place in the NFC North.
MLive’s Dungeon of Doom podcast opened the mailbag for this week’s episode. Hosts Kory Woods and Ben Raven had a ton of voice memo questions sent to the dungeonofdoom@mlive.com email address. The guys took to queries ranging from the offense under Campbell, Kerby Joseph’s injury, Tyleik Williams’ role and what the Lions are saying about the “tush push.”
The topic of Campbell taking control of his offense was, obviously, a major talking point this week.
Woods said he feels Campbell took over on offense out of necessity and for having that “finger on the pulse” we’ve talked about so often. Raven agreed on about 95% of what his co-host said before adding that he believes Campbell loves calling the offense and everything that comes with it. It’s just about figuring out the delegation methods on the fly.
“I think he fricking loves calling plays. I think he loves it. I think he loves the chess match. I think he loves people thinking he’s a meathead motivator. And I think he freaking loves showing that, man, I’m a Sean Payton disciple,” Raven said.
“When you hear ‘We’re struggling to get in a rhythm, there are communication issues.’ Campbell is down there on the field, in the mix. That starts on the sideline when he’s feeling the play. Like, that’s how you get sequential play calling. It’s feel. It’s rhythm. It’s thinking two, three steps down the line.”
As the Lions push toward the playoffs with crucial NFC matchups ahead, Campbell’s fingerprints on the offense could be the difference-maker, as we saw last week against the Washington Commanders.
