The San Francisco 49ers are starting to get healthy, and while players like Brandon Aiyuk might be a ways from returning, the team announced the final decision on quarterback Brock Purdy.
Purdy suffered a turf toe injury in Week 1, which led to his missing Weeks 2 and 3. After attempting to return in Week 4, he reggravated the injury, leading to his missing the next six games.
San Francisco head coach Kyle Shanahan has been as transparent as possible regarding Purdy’s injury, stating that he would take the field when ready. After weeks of his being limited in practice, Shanahan stated the quarterback would be handed a more “aggressive” practice to be ready for Week 11.
Now, Shanahan has made the final decision on Purdy returning from his injury.
Per multiple reports, Shanahan has confirmed that Purdy will return as the starting quarterback for the team against the Arizona Cardinals.
More 49ers:49ers' GM Jon Lynch Drops Major Return Update on Brandon Aiyuk
This is massive news, as the 49ers get back one of their most important players. At 6-4, Mac Jones has done well in his eight starts, posting a 5-3 record in that time.
Jones also threw for 2,151 yards, 13 touchdowns, and six interceptions. Despite the backup playing some good football, Purdy gives the team their best chance at winning.
There was some chatter regarding Jones potentially being the starter moving forward with how well he has played, but Shanahan shut that talk down almost immediately. He stated that Purdy would be the starter once he was fully healthy.
The 49ers are still in the thick of the NFC West race, as they are a game behind the first-place tied Los Angeles Rams and Seattle Seahawks. With a win against the Cardinals, San Francisco wil be 4-1 in divisional wins, which could count for a lot towards the end of the season.
Purdy’s return will be very welcome for the 49ers, and it appears the team continues to get healthier as the weeks go by. Aiyuk might also be gearing up for a return towards December, which would add another weapon and element to the team’s offense.
