The San Francisco 49ers announced some massive news prior to their contest against the Arizona Cardinals. It will directly impact San Francisco’s starting lineup as they are poised to welcome back Brock Purdy as their starting quarterback this Sunday. A development that could significantly boost the team’s playoff-push hopes. Purdy has been sidelined since Week 4 due to a toe injury, and his return marks the reclamation of a vital piece of the 49ers’ offensive strategy.

Purdy first suffered the turf toe injury in Week 1, missed the next two games, and then returned briefly in Week 4 before being sidelined again. Head coach Kyle Shanahan said that while Purdy’s toe isn’t expected to fully heal this season, doctors have medically cleared him and he participated in full-speed practice for the first time this week.
Purdy acknowledged that while he could throw without issue for a while, the injury hampered his ability to scramble — a key part of his game. He stated: “Dropping back and throwing, that’s been pretty good for a while… But to play quarterback in the NFL and to play like myself, I need to move a little bit. I wasn’t able to get there for a while. Now I feel ready to go.”
Strategic Impact for the 49ers
With Purdy returning, the 49ers’ offense regains its leading figure under center — someone the franchise sees as its long-term foundation. In his absence the team relied on backup Mac Jones, who has performed admirably, helping the 49ers remain in the playoff hunt despite major injuries around the roster.
As of now the team stands at 6-4. Purdy’s reinstatement signals that the 49ers are ready to transition from “holding their own” to actively contesting for the division and deeper playoff positioning.
The Timing Could Be Advantageous

Purdy’s return coincides with a favorable stretch of games. From Weeks 11 to 14 the 49ers face opponents that, combined, hold a relatively low winning record, providing a chance to build momentum with the quarterback fully back.
While other NFC West rivals — such as the Los Angeles Rams and the Seattle Seahawks — have tougher upcoming schedules, San Francisco’s schedule offers an opportunity to gain ground.
What Remains to Be Addressed
Though Purdy is back, questions remain. Shanahan has emphasized that Purdy’s mobility is still limited by the injury, and the coaching staff may need to manage his scrambles and lower-body engagement carefully. Moreover, integrating him back into an offense that has evolved in his absence will require a swift readjustment.
The return of Purdy also resurrects discussions surrounding Jones’ role and the quarterback decision; the organization has made clear that Purdy is the franchise quarterback when healthy.
For the 49ers, getting Purdy back is more than just a personnel boost — it’s a statement that they intend to contend aggressively. With the division race still tightly contested, the timing could not be better for their signal-caller’s comeback.
