Chelsea are always one of the most active teams in the transfer window, and while their main focus last summer was bolstering their attack, they did land a couple of new faces in the midfield.
But Dario Essugo, the main new addition, hasn’t been able to play much for the team due to injury, though young superstar Andrey Santos has been amazing in his return from Strasbourg as the third midfielder behind Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez.
Caicedo needs the others to be healthy so that he can finally get some rest, and while Enzo has been solid again this season, there’s a chance Chelsea could be looking to replace him with a more stable young playmaker.
According to a report from TEAMtalk, the No. 1 transfer target Chelsea have in mind for the upcoming January transfer window is Crystal Palace star Adam Wharton, who is the most in demand young regista in English football.
Clubs like Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United are dreaming of Wharton – and now so are Chelsea. Palace will ask for a king’s ransom from Wharton, but he is a special talent.
Chelsea having such a strong interest in Wharton is not good news for Fernandez, as the young England international could be tabbed as the former Benfica star’s replacement to create a world-class midfield axis with Caicedo.
