Community members learn about Aerozone transportation study that centers around the airport

MIDDLEBURG HEIGHTS, Ohio (WOIO) - Community members gathered to learn about a transportation and economic development study focused on the Aerozone District, the area in and around Cleveland Hopkins International Airport.

The Northeast Ohio Area Wide Coordinating Agency, also known as NOACA, initiated the pilot study called Transportation for Economic Development Initiatives, or TEDI. The study is in its infancy stage and likely won’t be complete until the end of next year.

“We initiated a study it’s a pilot study called Transportation for Economic Development Initiatives, we call it TEDI for short. The focus is the Aerozone District as a job hub and the transportation infrastructure that can be leveraged for economic development,” said Grace Gallucci, executive director of the Northeast Ohio Area Wide Coordinating Agency.

Study covers eight communities

------------------------------

The public was invited to the Middleburg Heights Community Center to share their ideas for what they want the future to hold for the Aerozone District. The 50-square mile area is centered around Cleveland Hopkins International Airport and the NASA Glenn Research Center and includes at least eight communities including Cleveland, Brook Park, Berea and Strongsville.

Dale Miller of Cleveland, who is on County Council and represents portions of Cleveland, Brook Park and Lakewood, said the study will identify scenarios about what the region may look like in the future.

“This study in particular will identify what some of the scenarios are about how this region could change over time and what kind of transportation improvements would be needed to best take advantage of those economic development prospects,” Miller said.

Browns stadium not main focus

-----------------------------

American Structurepoint, Inc. which is conducting the study, put up displays asking for key information from citizens like what community they live in, how often they use the airport, and what mode of transportation they use to get to events or the parks. However, NOACA made it clear the focus of this study is not about the Browns’ proposed domed stadium.

“Recognizing that the stadium has been proposed for Brook Park they’ll be a scenario that involves the Browns, but the study is not focused on the Browns. It’s one small component,” Gallucci said.

The Browns continue to move forward with building a stadium in Brook Park, and expect that it could attract millions of dollars of new development to the area.
