But he would rather be the No.10 in Fabian Hurzeler’s master plan.
The France under-21 international has been operating in support of Danny Welbeck in recent weeks.
He had a stint as furthest man forward at the start of the campaign.
Competition could hot up after the international break with Brajan Gruda expected back from injury and Charalampos Kostoulas continuing to make progress.
Kaoru Mitoma’s return could also have a knock-on effect if it frees up Diego Gomez to play in an attacking midfield role.
Rutter has a little extra responsibility this term after Joao Pedro moved to Chelsea.
He spoke about being a half-nine as he prepared for the season in Marbella in the summer.
Now, with the campaign well under way, Rutter told The Argus: “I prefer No.10 but it depends. If I play with Danny, No.10.
“Half-nine is more when I don’t play with Danny. I go around as a half-nine and it is not like being a fixed striker.
“But when I play with Danny it’s more like a ten.
“I think I’m more free acting as a No.10.
Rutter has not been at his best this season but impressed in the recent win over Leeds.
He recognises his role has been affected by Joao Pedro’s departure,
He added: “I think since he left I had this pressure but it’s football and I have to take it.
“Joao was a very good player but I don’t try to be him, I try to be me.”
